He faced the wrath of BJP supporters for his statements supporting the Narmada Bachao Andolan in 2006. Even though it led to his film Fanaa getting banned in Gujarat he did not buckle under pressure.‘Fanna’ eventually went on to be a blockbuster and swept several awards too.
This year, he faced the brickbats after voicing concern against growing intolerance in India.
