Vijayadashami – Why Do We Celebrate Dusshera?

Symbolism Behind The Festival

Festival-dussehra

The nine days of Navratri culminate with this cultural festival of Dussehra, which is all about the feminine goddess or feminine divinity. Navratri is replete with ample symbolism. It is about vanquishing evil and wanton nature and revering all aspects of life and all things that contribute to our well-being.

Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami which means ‘Day of Victory’. After Navratri, this tenth day is a symbolism of having conquered all the three basic qualities of tamas, rajas, and sattva. This means you successfully saw through each and every one of them and did not give in. The celebration of this day shows you participated in every one of these qualities, but did not invest in any one of them thereby winning over them. This is why this day is celebrated as the day of victory and brings home the point that reverence and gratitude towards everything in our lives brings success and victory.
